Hi, I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop and a phone running Android. I have Nightingale on my laptop and the songbird app on my phone. Here are my questions:

In the add-ons section of nightingale, and on the forums, I read that I can inatall songbirdremote add-on and download the app in the Google Play store, and control nightingale from my phone. The caveat given for linux is that you have to install avahi bonjour services first. However, there are only two .xpi files available: one for Windows 32, and one for OS X, and neither will install on my linux machine. How do I get this running in linux?

My other question is which android app is best to use with Nightingale. The reason I use nightingale is that it supports all the features I want on a music player, specifically smart playlists and playlist folders. There are no other linux players I know of that support playlist folders and this is very important to me. It doesn't look to me like the Android Songbird app supports them, though, so I'm wondering if you know any that do.

That notwithstanding, I would like to know which app is best to get my music and playlists synched to my Android device.

the Songbird Remote add-on is proprietary and just ported to nightingale with a install.rdf change. I have "ported" an ancient version of the add-on for Ubuntu 32 bits. I also asked on their getsatisfaction site if they'll officially support Nightingale.

About the player for android I can't help... not really what I know. I'm not even sure if we can sync playlist folders.

Thanks for the reply. I cold "port" a newer one as well just by changing install.rdf myself. Most add-ons don't have separate mac/windows versions, so which one should I port, the mac one or the windows one? Which one did you use for your port?

This is the latest version available for linux I ported... You cannot use a Mac or Windows version on Linux since it uses precompiled binaries, which can't be executed on your system.

I have another question about Nightingale synchronization. You can go to this page in Nightingale and sync your files, or choose specific playlists. However, it doesn't look like you can move the smart playlist files to that location. Am I incorrect about that? How do I get my actual smart playlists (or any playlists) out of Nightingale and onto a device?

You should be able to select your smart (and regular) playlists in the list of playlists. If you freshly created them (since opening the synchronization pane), you'd need to first hit the refresh button.

Set up a profile (the small arrow down on the right hand side), check the playlists you want to sync, pick a target folder and hit start sync. Did you try that? If you need help with the various switches, click at the Manual button in the bottom-right corner, it holds some reference about all the features the synchronization pane delivers to you.

When syncing, the current state of the playlists will be used, smart playlists will not update on the device, as that is not technically possible.

This is great. I was able to get all my smart playlists on my device. They aren't in folders anymore, but this is progress. Also, it looks like it flattened them into normal playlists, which is also OK.

As far as the remote goes, it works perfectly --- on my laptop. On my desktop it doesn't work at all. It's the damnedest thing. I installed the exact same xpi, the versions of nightingale are the same (1.11.1), I can ssh and vnc into both my laptop and desktop. I can use XBMC remote on my desktop fine, but when I go to the android app and try to add my desktop's IP it says 'Error, unable to connect!'.

What could be different from one computer to the other? Maybe the port is in use by XBMC? My laptop is running Ubuntu 12.04 and the desktop is running Mint 14 Mate edition. Everything else is the same.

You can put playlists as folders, when enabling the "Re-organize song files in target folder" switch and using the %playlist% tag in the schema. Consult the Synchronization Manual, Chapter Profiles for details. Feel free to ask if you have additional questions.

Maybe you have some kind of firewall enabled somewhere on the connection smartphone - deskop? Maybe the desktop itself blocks the connection, maybe the router or a switch?

Well I still haven't been able to figure out why the android app isn't working, but in the meantime I have a different problem. I can't figure out where to put my playlists. There's a field in the settings that says 'Relative target folder'. I assumed this to mean where to put the playlists, relative to the music. However, When Nightingale writes the playlists the paths to the music are wrong. For instance, when My music is in /music and my playlists are in /music/playlists, I can open one of those playlists and the path to the song looks like this:

./../../music/song.mp3

When it should just be ../music/song.mp3. I don't know why it's doing this.
