I guess there is no general way of handling that, as every NAS can/will behave different.

If your NAS provides a simple file listing via HTTP, browse it with Nightingale, a playlist will get displayed under the folder listing.

If your NAS provides a way to mount it (with Drive letter on Windows), you can use the same way: open a new tab and insert the path to the folder.

If none of the above applies to you, please post on what way you can access the files.

.... and if you not only want playback, but you need them in your library, you might be able to import them via File|Import Media (rough translation from German). If not, it will probably be simple to add support given that the files are accessible without any authorization.

Please read my answer again, I presented multiple ways to access the files, and also one way which will do the library integration step (which includes playlists, random access, etc.):

This includes the way you solved the issue on mac: mount the network drive, and just import from the mounted path. Nightingale does not care where your music physically is, it should only be accessible by a uri (and file: uris work best).
If watch folders are available on linux (not sure about that), they should work on the mounted folder, too.
