Question  10-24-2010, 03:43 PM (This post was last modified: 11-25-2010, 04:21 AM by stevo.)
What is happening to the development of Nightingale?

I have been watching what is going on in the forums and I am glad to see so much interest in the project. I have pulled everything together that was posted and with what I already know about the project to determine our first Roadmap, and how this project is going to proceed.

First off let me explain how this project will go forward. We will have two projects under the Nightingale name. The first project will be the Songbird for Linux build, this will be mainly a re-branding and add-ons that contribute to running on Linux. We will build both 32 and 64 bit version of Songbird under the name of Nightingale COS (Child of Songbird). We will be using version 1.8 for the initial build. The second project will be a fork of Songbird, this will be a more Linux specific build using existing libraries (XULRunner, Gstreamer, TagLib, etc). This project will allow us to get packages done for Ubuntu and others. We will also have more freedom to make Nightingale the best Linux media player we can.

Here is the initial roadmap for these two projects:

Nightingale COS
  • Version 1.8 (Based off of Songbird 1.8) [~Jan 1 2011]
    • Branding
      • Text
      • Feather
      • Icons/Images
  • Addons
    • Notification
  • Version 1.9 [~Apr 1 2011]
    • Addons
      • CD Ripping
      • Lyrics Master
  • Version 2.0 [~May 1 2011]
    • Addons
      • Shoutcast
      • Now Playing List
  • Version 2.1 [~Aug 1 2011]
    • Addons
      • iPod
      • MSC
      • MTP

Nightingale (Fork)
  • Version 1.0 [~Aug 1 2011]
    • Native Xulrunner
    • Native GStreamer
    • Native Taglib
    • (Other libraries currently built with Songbird)

Notes:
  1. Removeal of the browser
    • We are unable to actually remove the browser, we can however hide it and remove the items (address bar, tab bar) that are related to a web browser.
  2. Time-lines
    • The time-lines are approximate.
    • Both versions (COS and Fork) are going to be worked on in parallel.
    • This is based on only a few people working on Nightingale, more may mean faster Smile.

More to come....

Thanks very much for the update. Is it possible to give at least a provisional timeline to go with the milestones? Because, from my point of view, I can already run Songbird 1.8 on my Ubuntu system. What I need is the add-ons supporting different MP3 players, particularly the iPod. It would be good to know if the target is to have them available in three months or a year.

Thanks.

Yeah, nice. It would be nice with a rough timetime though
I am thinking of digging a bit into addon developement and CD/iPod support if I finds time to that. But i guess it it done before that.

I am of the same opinion as goshawk. I am a very big fan of songbird basically from the beginning of the project and I would love for it to come back to Linux. Since I use songbird with my ipod I still use version 1.2 since it's the last that supports the ipod add-on.

I really appreciate all the work you dedicate to this project and if I had any programming skills at all, I would try to contribute something myself.

A rough estimate of the milestones would be really helpful.

Thanks, Stevo. That clarifies alot of questions for me.

What is the ETA of your first Nightingale COS / Fork releases?

I am currently running Songbird 1.7.3 compiled into a .Deb by Skyzim. http://skyzim.com/ . He's been compiling .debs since Mozilla's pulled the plug on Songbird linux. You may want to try to recruit him into your project. There's alot of issues with addon compatibility (such as) but I bet your combined efforts would yield a kickass player...

Thanks for the information, I will look into that. Also to be clear Mozilla does not have anything to do with Songbird except that Songbird uses the XULRunner toolkit to build the application. Songbird is a completely separate company (Pioneers of the Inevitable), which is not owned, or affiliated with Mozilla.

Thanks,
Stevo.

A bit off-topic, but I think you can use the iPod addon with newer versions if you update the maxversion (Dobnt'r rememember the name, but you unterstands it when you see it) in install.rdf in the XPI file. I think I've made it to work.

Okay, sorry for that. I will look into that. Thanks for the advice.

I've tried it again yesterday, but with no luck. Maybe it works for you? Last time i tried it I used the 1.8 stable release of Sb, but now I used the one from the SVN respitory. The versionnumber is still 1.8? I forgot to check that.

No the last time any work was done on the iPod add-on was before the major changes in the device api was completed. The iPod add-on will need some updating to use the new APIs before it will work.
