I just downloaded the tar.bz2 zip file available on the website. But i can't figure out how to install nightingale on the system. Please help.

The .tar.bz doesn't contain an installer, instead it just has an executable that can be run as-is when the whole thing is extracted together. You'd have to take the "system integration" steps an installer takes yourself (namely adding a desktop file and icon) and manage getting all the deps yourself, too.

You can get the icon and desktop file with make install, if you decide to build nightingale yourself, which is considerably more complicated though (needs more deps etc.)

Would be a great help if you could explain what adding a desktop file and icon means. Also I don't know what a "dep " is as well.

How adding the desktop file and icon means exactly depends on your desktop environment and is quite generic, so you should be able to find instructions on that for your specific desktop environment.

Dep is just a short for for "dependency", so a package/program/library that is required to correctly run a program.
