Hi,
I've got a philips gogear raga and I'd like to use it with nightingale. I've read the nightingale sync manual, so I'd like to sync the device content to nightingale.
What folder have I to choose to use it as target folder? Do you have any ideas? Huh

Waiting for a reply,

Cheers Smile

Disclaimer: I don't have a gogear raga, so there is a little bit of guessing involved in this post.

First, connect your player in MSC mode. MTP is not supported by Nightingale at the moment. If your player shows up like a USB flash drive, you're in the correct mode (if you can't find anything about that, have a look at the player's preferences. I remember some phillips players remembering whatever they choosed when first connecting).

After you got that, switch to the Synchronisation tab in Nightingale. Click at the Browse button on the right side of the target folder textbox. You should be able to locate your player in the window popping up, on Windows 7 for example under the "Computer" node. Alternatively, you can enter the mount point of the device directly. On windows, that is the device's letter (for example "E:\"); on linux usually something starting with "/media/". I personally like to add a subfolder on my player, like "Nightingale" or "Music" so that I can store non-media items on it as well.

Note that syncing your player with Nightingale is NOT a bidirectional sync (as someone with your nick asked in irc). You can, however, configure your sync profile to delete all non-Nightingale files (be careful with that when you don't use a subfolder for music - files are NOT moved to trash but deleted instantly).

What it might mean? Smile

There was a person on irc asking on how to sync music FROM their mp3 player (copy songs from your mp3 player to Nightingale automatically). In a bidirectional sync, that would be possible. This is not posisble with the synchronization feature, as it is a unidirectional sync (Nightingale to mp3 player, not vice versa).

For a complete unidirectional sync you'll have to explicitly allow Nightingale to delete files, that way it can not only transfer new music to the mp3 player but also remove songs you removed from synced playlists.

If I still weren't able to explain it in an understandable way, let me know Wink

Ok, but the gogear manual tells that I can transfer the player content to pc via songbird. Can I do the same thing with nightingale? If first I don't transfer the player content to pc, I can't sync and manage songs and others with nightingale Smile

Nightingale isn't intended to be used for that. You can just copy your music to your pc directly (without Nightingale), and Nightingale wouldn't make that task more easy.

For that, connect your player in MSC mode, open a file manager and copy the player's content to any location on your pc. Then drag them into Nightingale, and you should be ready to go. You then have all tracks available from Nightingale, including the feature to sync them to your player.

Note that Nightingale does not store your music, so the music files on your pc must not get deleted if you wish to keep them within Nightingale, while the files on your device will get re-created while syncing (thus you could delete them on occasions).

Thanks! I've created a copy of the gogear content on my personal computer. Then, I've imported it in Nightingale and I can see the songs list in Music tab. Finally, I made some changes but I don't know how to apply changes to the folder located in my computer. I've tried to sync but I don't know exactly how to do this. Any ideas? Smile

As you don't seem to do this often, let me recommend a backup first: create yet another copy of your player's content somewhere on your computer and do not touch it until you are confident that everything is working as it should.

Nightingale should apply changes (in terms of metadata) directly to your files (in the folder on your computer). You do not need to apply them explicitly. To sync your changes to your player, go to the synchronization tab, and perform the following (do not continue without doing a backup in case I misunderstood your requirements):

Click the Down-Arrow on the right side of the current profile drop-down box. Do the following configuration:

Sync features: Enable the options "Copy song files to target folder", "Update changed song files in target folder", "Delete all other files and folders from target folder"; Disable the options "Re-organize song files in target folder", "Write Playlists to target folder" (you may wish to enable these later, though) and "Perform a Rockbox-Back-Sync on target device".

Do not touch the advanced preferences.

Then, save the profile under some name you can remember (this step is optional).

If you don't have songs you wish to exclude from your player, then select only the Library node in the "Playlist to sync" box. If you wish to store only a part of your library on it, select playlists that contain the songs to sync.

Then enter your player's mount point (on Windows, the drive letter followed by a ':' character) as target folder and hit start sync. WARNING: this will wipe your player, and override everything stored on it with nightingale's music.

You can additionally store the setup as a sync favorite, making updating your player a matter of clicking a button (on windows, please verify the drive letter did not change to prevent overriding sensible files).

I selected the 'Library' checkbox and I pressed the 'Start Sync' button. This process has deleted all the content on the mp3 player and it has added only song files contained in Library->Music list Confused
This, of course, is not what I expected Sad What is the right method in order to get a successful synchronization? Thanks in advance! Smile

What did you expect to get synced that didn't? Playlists?
