Hello,

First of all, I'm really happy that there is finally a stable build of Nightingale, I've been hoping for it! Smile

I've downloaded the stable version to my kubuntu 10.04. It scanned my music library but found all the files besides mp3.

When I try to play any ogg file, it says:

Code:
(nightingale-bin:11452): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_object_ref: assertion `object != NULL' failed

(nightingale-bin:11452): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_object_sink: assertion `GST_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

(nightingale-bin:11452): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_object_ref: assertion `object != NULL' failed

(nightingale-bin:11452): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_set: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

(nightingale-bin:11452): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_bin_add: assertion `GST_IS_ELEMENT (element)' failed

(nightingale-bin:11452): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_element_get_pad: assertion `GST_IS_ELEMENT (element)' failed

(nightingale-bin:11452): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_bin_add_many: assertion `GST_IS_ELEMENT (element_1)' failed

(nightingale-bin:11452): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_element_get_pad: assertion `GST_IS_ELEMENT (element)' failed

(nightingale-bin:11452): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_pad_link: assertion `GST_IS_PAD (srcpad)' failed

(nightingale-bin:11452): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_object_unref: assertion `object != NULL' failed

(nightingale-bin:11452): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_pad_link: assertion `GST_IS_PAD (sinkpad)' failed

(nightingale-bin:11452): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_object_unref: assertion `object != NULL' failed

(nightingale-bin:11452): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_element_get_pad: assertion `GST_IS_ELEMENT (element)' failed

(nightingale-bin:11452): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_ghost_pad_new: assertion `GST_IS_PAD (target)' failed

(nightingale-bin:11452): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_element_add_pad: assertion `GST_IS_PAD (pad)' failed

and some more of that, but it starts to repeat itself. Than there is another different error, that I get in the graphical error message in Nightingale :

Code:
"Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho" was unable to play because the decoder (MPEG-4 AAC demuxer) can not be found.

This means, for right now I cannot play any music with Nightingale. Anyone suggestions? It'd be really cool to get this working, then I could finally upgrade without having to find a new music library and player that has everything that I need (and nightingale has)

Cheers
luh

Welcome to Nightingale Smile

Do you have gstreamer installed? Nightingale relys on the system's gstreamer on linux, so it is needed that you have a working gstreamer installation. I'm not sure about what packages are needed, maybe our linux guys can help you there.

Did you build Nightingale by yourself? If not, try that as it then supports other locations for gstreamer if I remember right. On linux compiling is as easy as getting the source and running build.sh (given you have build-essential and gstreamer installed).

Try to install all of the gstreamer plugins. I think mp3 support is part of the "bad" plugins set. But If I were you I'd just go ahead and install all of the gstreamer plugins.
Type this into a terminal:
Code:
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-really-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly

This seems to be the same problem I'm having on 12.04. 1.8 doesn't have this error, but I haven't had all that much time to look into all of it. I opened an issue on github about it.

I am having this issue as well. I'm on Ubuntu 11.10.

I have all the gstreamer packages that you've listed pre-installed as part of my ubuntu distro.

Could the error be related to location from which I am running Nightingale from. Meaning, in programing Nightingale, the devs may have assumed that I am running it from XYZ directory whereas I am running it from my home folder. So Nightingale may be unable to find the gstreamer files because I didn't put where I'm supposed to? It's a wild guess...

Anyway, here are my errors readouts:

Part 1: Errors when I start up Nightingale
Part 2: Errors when I add mp3 to library
Part 3: Errors when I try to play ogg file (which gets added to library but does not play in NG - and I know it plays in other players)

===============================
Part1
This is the error readout I get when I start it

==================================
Part2
I get this error when I try to add mp3s to library
=======

dragging the file into NG, gets me no readout whatsoever (as if I didn't even do anything)

using the import media window, gets me:

(nightingale-bin:4030): Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_window_set_icon_list: icons too large

(nightingale-bin:4030): Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_window_set_icon_list: icons too large

But I think that that's related to opening the Import Media dialog and not the actual attempt to import the Mp3

Part3:
When I try to play a Ogg file, I get this error

=========

UPDATE:
I manage to make the warning below go away

Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "pixmap",

by installing gtk2-engines-pixbuf

but it didn't resolved any of the other issues

Guys, since this Thread is really a Bug report, I've opened a new thread in the Helpdesk area where we'd be more likely to get the devs to help. I've posted a link to this Thread from there.

In addition, since I think it's some incampatibility with Ubuntu's Gstreamer packages, I've added a poll where Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu users can give feedback on whether they are experiencing our problems. Please take the time to vote in the poll.

Here is the New Thread:

I disagree that the Helpdesk is a better way to get in touch with devs, as it is still in the consumer-part of the forum. If you want to adress devs directly, maybe technical or visual development are the way to go. But probably most devs are reading through the whole forum, so it is not a big matter.
Also, the best way for a bug is to be tracked, and this bug is already tracked as issue #78, as johnmurrayvi wrote before.

I'm not saying it is a bad place for polls, through. Tongue - probably the poll idea helps the linux guys to locate the issue a bit better Smile
Also, it is a good place for all kinds of issues, to create github issues from it.

Oh, and I think we might move this thread to helpdesk, maybe?

Saw it, and as it got merged already this thread is [closed].

As there was a question in another thread: This bug is fixed at github, you need to build NG yourself to get the fix - or you have to wait for the next version.

Please note that the issue is not fixed in current public release versions. Grab the ubuntu testing build instead.
