What is the license for the grid view add-on developed by JohnM?

http://wiki.getnightingale.com/doku.php?...#grid_view

The download does not contain a license.

Is it what is described on the wiki page footer?

Quote:Except where otherwise noted, content on this wiki is licensed under the following
license: CC Attribution 3.0 Unported

I wish to adapt it and release it under a free software license.

Edit:

Changed title to contain [resolved]

No, the extensions do not fall under the license in the footer. There is no license declared within the install.rdf file of the extension, so generally the copyright of its author would apply.

You can try to reach JohnM (no idea how you'd achieve that) and ask him for permission.

I was never able to find an email address or any other type of web profile where JohnM could be reached.

inousenightingale, are you planning to make upgrades to it? It's my favourite addon and I've been wanting to try to update some stuff in it once I get some free time, so I'm just curious what you're planning to do with it Smile

Also, there's a bunch of old Songbird addons that did similar things but have not been ported to Nightingale, in case you're interested:

https://web.archive.org/web/201209031057...addon/1309
https://web.archive.org/web/201207102158...addon/1311
https://web.archive.org/web/201205091635...addon/1342
https://web.archive.org/web/201210241942...addon/1414
https://web.archive.org/web/201209041325...addon/1447

freaktechnik, are the addons fair game to be modified if the original authors can't be reached?

Hi zjays,

The songbird addons from moshy are similar to what I wanted.
  • Album View

  • Album List

  • Now playing list

  • Catalogue View

However, the addon downloads have no license in the install.rdf

The creator of the songbird addons has listed his real name. I will try to contact him as I think he has a website.

This is by no means an official statement but much more a personal statement: I think, yes. I have done the same with the media flow extension, which is by the same JohnM and he abandoned it long ago. People have been repackaging his code for a long time already, and I'd think most of those authors don't mind and would actually be amazed how somebody decided to struggle with code from their past self.

I've since completely rewritten "MediaFlow" and also plan on giving it a different name, so I do not conflict with anything JohnM has done.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. Maybe if I get around to changing anything in the Grid View addon I'll leave a link to the original version and put in a note to the author stating to contact me if he has any problems with the changes.
