I am a long time songbird user, have been since I started using Ubuntu.
But from 1year now I miss iPod/iPhone support in linux. Songbird initially had an Add-on for apple devices but it's now obsolete. I think it will be a good direction for nightingale to provide support for world's most widely used devices, which include ipods and iphones.
Also what is the status? I make it a point to check the forums regularly, but there hasn't been any activity from the last 40 or so days.
When can we see a stable nightingale release?
I think instead of writing our own libraries, it would be great it Nightingale could rely on libraries like podsleuth that other music players rely on.
I don't know that writing our own libs is the way to go here - we should just settle on one of the opensource ones out there, and if we find ways to improve those along the way, we can submit patches to their development...

That said, newer apple devices tend to be tricky, and I'm not an expert (and don't have one anymore), so I'm not sure whether or not they work with anything other than iTunes these days.

I used to just run rockbox anyway...now I use my android phone with rsync (although I could use foldersync with ngale too...)
Nightingale should have support for MSC devices and for MTP devices, since now with Ice-Cream Sandwich all new Android phones will only have MTP.
Regarding iphones and ipods, I think the best way is to use the open source libraries at libgpod (http://gtkpod.org/wiki/Libgpod)
This libraries work very well with many different ipods and iphones (not sure about the latest).
Yeah, libgpod is a good choice.

Though I actually thing we should try getting MTP devices to work first, since there are now more of them out there than there used to be. Plus I like how MTP works better than iPods. xD But iDevice support would do wonders for Nightingale's popularity, methinks. That is if it's even possible though. I haven't owned an iPod in years. Do people even use iPods anymore? I've kinda assumed everyone listened to music off their iPhones/pads.

Oh, and podcast support would definitely be nice! The only halfway decent media player that also plays podcasts correctly is Banshee, but for the last several versions it wouldn't play the podcasts all the way and it plays them in the wrong order! I want to be able to play them from oldest to newest like I used to be able to on iTunes long ago. Rhythmbox just doesn't cut it as a media player.
So, did POTI give up on podcast support? Because the source code makes a number of references to podcasts, yet this was never actually made a "feature" of Songbird.

EDIT: Wait, scratch that. I got Nightingale to import a podcast, but it was a gigantic pain to get it to import one episode of the podcast and it refuses to import the other episodes.
I just want to ask whether there is development in the direction of ipod support. I would highly appreciate that since I am not satisfied with rhythmbox or banshee concerning that matter.

Currently there is no development for ipod support. If you're a coder, feel free to implement it - we'd love to integrate it into the official add-ons repo (and the license of the library you use is allowed).

If not, note that Apple wants their users to force them to use only their software, as they earn money with personalized advertisement and the shop integrated. So they try to lock their devices for other software, and don't care for compartibility. This is the main reason for me not to use or recommend any Apple products (besides of the bad price-performance ratio).
So there is some effort needed, and we'd have to integrate a library besides the difficulty of creating a device addon, which no community member ever did.
I don't think a developer is able to write such an add-on without using iPods. So we need to find somebody being both a developer and iPod user for this task.

Yeah, it's on the perpetual waiting list along with 9000 other essential features I think (this may be a slight exaggeration).
Alright. Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I am no developer. Now I can see that this is a feature that I probably don't have to wait for and so I have to find other means of syncing my ipod.
